Luke 13:18-19

[18] Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?

[19] It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

Grain of mustard seed- it is a living thing.

Plant a button and see what happens.   Leave a seed on a shelf and see what happens. Come back a year later and it will still be the same.

Did you ever examine a seed?

There is all in it that ever comes out; the branch, leaf, flower, fruit, even more seed.

It’s all in that little seed, but for it to come out it must be planted!

It is the gospel of salvation. In its simplicity, it is profound.

The seed is this; Jesus came into the world to save the lost.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Do not let it lie on the shelf!

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Look how much lies within the simple gospel.

Within the truth lies regeneration, repentance, faith, holiness, zeal, consecration, perfection.

Heaven hides itself away in the gospel.

A man took the seed and cast it into HIS garden.

We will not see any results at all, until we plant the seed.

Take a truth, especially that great doctrine, that man is lost and that Jesus is the only savior, and see to it that you lace it into the mind. Teach plainly the great truth, that whoever believes in him has everlasting life, and that the Lord Jesus bare our sins in his own body on a tree and suffered for us, the just for the unjust.

Take these truths and set them forth to the mind and see what comes of it.

Sow the seed: tell children the doctrine of the cross, the fact that with the stripes of Jesus we are healed, and that by faith in him, we are justified.

We must continually bring the living word of the living God into the hearts of men.

The mustard seed will never grow unless put into the soil: the owner will never have a crop of mustard unless he first sows the seed.

Teacher, do not become weary of your humble work, because no one can measure its importance. Tell your Sunday school kids about the son of God, who lived and loved and died that the ungodly could be saved.

Be not weary in well doing, for in due season ye shall reap if ye faint not.

It is yours and mine to teach everyone the simple truth, that Jesus came into the world to save sinners and that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

We are coming upon the holiday season; a time of thanksgiving and the Christmas holiday. What a wonderful time to tell the world that in that baby in the manger there was the eternal God.

A man cast the mustard seed into HIS garden.

It was a very natural thing. It is most natural that we teach others what it is that we believe ourselves.

Still it is an act of faith. It is always an act of faith to sow seed; because you have to give it up for a time.

The farmer takes his choice seed corn and throws it into the soil of his field. Only his faith keeps him from being judged a manic; he expects it to return to him fifty-fold.

If you had never seen a harvest, you would think that a man burying good wheat under the clods had gone mad, and if you’ve never seen conversions, it might seem absurd to teach children the story of a man who was nailed to a tree.

Believe in what you are doing;

According to thy faith, be it unto thee, and the law of the harvest; ye shall reap what ye sow.

A man planted a mustard seed in HIS garden.

We know of the mission fields across the sea and of the countless wonderful ministries that are spread across the land.
But what of your mission? Where has the Lord placed you, and what is it that he requires of you, but to take the seed and sow into the ground?

In other words, tell your friends and loved ones the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What of the mustard seed that was planted? The Bible says it grew into a great tree and the birds of the air made their nests and lodged in it.

That is what we hope will happen. We sow in hope, but there is noting that we can do to make it grow.

Paul said, “I have planted, Apollos has watered, but God gives the increase.

When man was created, God breathed into his nostril the breath of life and man became a living soul.

It is the Lord that put life into the mustard seed and made it grow and it is God who put life into the gospel and makes it to grow

Planting the seed of truth, spreading the gospel, preaching the gospel are acts of faith. We plant the seed in hope. We labor in love. We receive no glory, God gives the increase. Jesus causes it to grow.

This is his plan, but all hinges on the fact that he man planted the seed.

We are the vessels that God intends to use to further his Kingdom. Consider the scripture text again for a moment.

Unto what is the kingdom of God like?

He is talking about the kingdom of God!!!!!!!

It is you and I planting the seed of the gospel in faith and the gospel growing in the hearts of men and women. Each in return becoming believers and bringing others into the fold.

It is the church becoming a sanctuary for the lost and dying.

Consider with me for a moment the prospect of the man NOT planting the seed.

What if we don’t spread the good news of the gospel?

Our teaching and preaching the truth may preserve souls from the deep darkness of the abode of the lost.

In other words, the preaching of the cross of Christ, and its reception by the lost will keep that soul from dying and going to a devil’s hell!!!

You talk about influence. When that man held that tiny seed in his hand you could barely see it, but it grew into a tree of massive proportions. When he planted that tree, did he have thoughts of bringing birds to that spot?

You may not know all that you are doing when you are teaching that child the way of salvation to Jesus.

When you are trying to bring a soul to Jesus, your action has a thousand hooks attached to it.

You never really know who the Holy Ghost is dealing with; who he is calling, but rest assured, he IS at work. There is a seed waiting to be planted in hope of its harvest.

We may make no connection to the mustard seed and the birds of the air. You may never know the influence you wield upon the future generations by the teaching of that one little boy or sending lessons to that one lonely prisoner, but there maybe a missionary to Red China who will win the multitudes to Jesus Christ. There may be the next great chaplain of that Prison facility, who leads many to Christ through his outreach.

You just plant the seed. You just keep on giving a reason of the hope that lies within you.

You just wait upon the Lord and run and not grow weary, walk and not faint. Mount up the wings of the eagle.

Every time you tell the tidings of pardon bought with blood, you are filling the choirs of glory with sweet voices, which to the eternal Name above every Name, shall day and night ring out songs of devout gratitude.

How many will find sanctuary in the branches of your humble seed.  All the musical instruments of the world, played by the greatest musicians on the face of the earth, can never rival the beauty of the song bird.

Never has the song been sung that will rival the beauty of one who has been brought to sanctuary by YOUR faithfulness in the gospel.

If heaven has placed such dependency upon the simple teaching of this great and glorious truth, let’s never cease from this divine and hallowed service.
